Reaching for the Sky(pe):

How to Zoom into Mediating via Online Video Conferencing

4 CPD points

As a mediation training provider, we wanted to do what we could to support mediators who chose to provide meetings online. So, we are offering a 3 hour, interactive, virtual course online to mediators on how to mediate safely and proficiently via online video conferencing. To help at this difficult time, this course is offered on a “pay what you can” basis to ensure that anyone who would like to practice their online mediation skills can do so.

The restrictions arising from Coronavirus mean that Mediators everywhere are having to get creative in order to offer a service. Many mediators are now moving to mediating online using applications such as Skype and Zoom. For some, mediating online may already be familiar territory. But for many mediators whose preferred approach is mediating in person, mediating online may feel a little daunting.

The course will include:-
  • Preparation for using online mediation for your clients and for you
  • The range of applications available to do this
  • Practical considerations for a successful online meeting
  • Managing discussions and dealing with high emotion and conflict
  • Online alternatives to using a flipchart and viewing documents
  • Safeguarding issues when mediating online

Even though the course will be virtual, like all our courses we aim to make the course practice focused with opportunities for small group work and role play online. Courses will be small (no more than 12 participants per course) to ensure all participants have opportunities to practice their skills and leave the course feeling more confident in their ability to mediate online.

Due to the popularity of the course we have added two new dates. Each can accommodate 12 participants each, so we recommend you book early to ensure you are able to participate at the most convenient time for you.

We have kept the price of this course deliberately low at just £20 per person. However we are aware of the severe financial pressures on some mediators at present. So, if you would really like to do this course but can’t afford the £20 at the moment, please book anyway offering whatever you can afford. We will accept all bookings at full and reduced rate on an equal first come first served basis.

Course dates:-

Friday 17th April, 10am   FULL

Tuesday 21st April, 2pm   FULL

Thursday 23rd April, 10am   FULL

Wednesday 29th April, 2pm   FULL

Tuesday 12th May, 10am  FULL

Due to popular demand we are planning one last course (date TBC) – contact us for details

Can’t make these dates? Contact us anyway to go on our list for future courses. Or, if you would like to book an in-house course for your mediation team please get in touch and we can arrange a special course for you.

Feedback from previous courses

Here is what people are saying about the Reach for the Sky(pe) course:

“I enjoyed this course very much and it was incredibly timely for the current lockdown environment! I learned so many helpful tips from Lorraine but the best was her manner and style of using Zoom to build rapport with the group and maintain it throughout .”

“I found it reassuring to attend this course as I had practised with Zoom beforehand and attended the free Zoom training sessions so although I had some familiarity using Zoom it was helpful to put it into the mediation context. It was also useful to share knowledge with other mediators who are using the technology for the first time too .”

“It was really well explained and clear. I particularly liked Lorraine’s calm manner, which made me feel confident of sorting any issues that might arise. I enjoyed Lorraine’s facilitation style which allowed us to talk through various issues in the small groups. It was helpful and a pleasant experience. “

“It was very useful to hear from mediators who have experienced and been doing online mediations”

“I enjoyed the opportunity to hear other mediators as to how they are working during the crisis and to have some basic information from Lorraine of how we can use zoom with our breakout rooms. Some useful advice was given and techniques to watch for online. Very useful.”

“I found the course extremely helpful. Printed material and extra information was excellent. There was a good balance of professional teaching and more informal approach to serve the needs of different attendees.”

“The trainer was engaging and friendly. However the course was light on content for three hours length. Appreciate it is difficult to pitch the course at a level to suit everyone but a bit more hard information re. how to share documents etc. rather than mainly relying on contributions from the attendees would have helped.”

“Thought it was excellent. Very relaxed and just love how people are so willing to share their knowledge and experience. Thank you “

“It was useful to do the role play even though we went over the time of the session. I like Lorraine’s pace and the information that she provided is extremely useful. It’s good to share ideas and experiences which Lorraine encouraged.”

“A thoroughly enjoyable course with lots of interesting experience and information provided by the trainer and likewise other practitioners working within this area.”

“Thank you, very relevant, insightful and enjoyable.”
